2002 Jeep Liberty Won't move?

I was at a stoplight and went to go, and was in first gear, but i moved only a little bit until my car just stopped. The RPM went up, but the car itself would continue to roll backwards. What could this be. My dad said maybe the linkage between the stick and transmission? Does this car even have one of those?
