Volunteer groups question?

I have been looking into joining a volunteer group for missions around the world. My question is. Why are these non profit volunteer groups charging their volunteers money to join? This really detours me from joining anything. And don't make any sense. Pay money to be a volunteer to help people with needs. Makes me sad.
