I have a turbocharger question?

so, i dont know very much about car parts and cars in general other than i have one. i have a 1998 jeep grand cherokee limited v6. i was wondering if i could have a turbocharger installed on to my jeep. i understand the turbochargers (for a good one) go for about $2000. i was wondering a few things, what do they do exactly? ive looked it up and so far ive picked up that it makes the car go faster and it helps save on gas as well,,,is this true? is there anything else? and should i even consider installing this to my car because i do want it to go faster and get better gas (if thats the case).and what are good brand names or specifically ones that i should consider and if you could include a website, thatd help me out a lot.
